Why can’t Ukraine build its own alliance?
Former Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi argues that Kyiv should stop waiting for NATO membership and instead build new security alliances.
Strategically, that may sound reasonable. But there is one major obstacle.
Ukraine is still at war. If any country signs a binding defense treaty with Ukraine today, it also risks being drawn into a direct conflict with Russia, something no country wants. That is also why Ukraine has not joined NATO.
If even NATO is not yet willing to share that risk, building a new military alliance with an equivalent level of commitment would be even harder.
Ukraine’s problem is not a lack of partners. The real problem is that no country is currently willing to accept a legal obligation to fight in defense of Ukraine.
In other words, Ukraine can build a network of partners today. But forming a genuine defense alliance will likely have to wait until the battlefield or the broader geopolitical environment changes.
