Turkey Is Rapidly Filling the Power Vacuum
From Syria to Lebanon
President Erdogan has announced that Turkey is ready to participate in initiatives aimed at securing Lebanon after the current international force withdraws. Ankara also pledged to continue supporting the Lebanese Armed Forces and help rebuild southern Lebanon following the conflict with Israel.
After expanding its influence in Syria, Turkey is now steadily moving into Lebanon at a time when Hezbollah has been weakened and Iran’s regional influence is declining.
Turkey is not expanding its influence through territorial conquest. Instead, it is relying on security cooperation, military training, reconstruction, and support for state institutions to establish long-term influence.
Power vacuums never last. When one regional power weakens or retreats, another inevitably moves in. From Syria to Lebanon, Turkey is signaling its ambition to fill that vacuum and play a leading role in shaping a new order in the Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East.
However, Ankara’s path will not be easy. Israel is closely watching every Turkish move in Lebanon. While Tel Aviv may welcome a weaker Hezbollah and a stronger Lebanese Army, it is unlikely to accept Turkey freely expanding its influence along Israel’s northern frontier. If this trend continues, Lebanon could become the next arena of strategic competition between Turkey and Israel.
