Israel is approaching what may be its greatest opportunity in Gaza
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again declared that Hamas must be disarmed, Gaza demilitarized, and extremism eradicated. This signals that Israel’s objective is no longer just defeating Hamas, but reshaping Gaza into a new political order where the Palestinian Authority or another governing body could replace Hamas under Israeli security oversight and international support.
From a military perspective, this may be Israel’s best opportunity in years. After nearly two years of war, Hamas has been significantly weakened in manpower, infrastructure, and command capabilities. At the same time, Iran, Hamas’s main backer, has also been weakened and is far less capable of sustaining its proxy network.
What remains now is largely a political decision in Washington. If the United States continues to support Israel, or at least refrains from forcing it to halt the campaign, Israel’s chances of eliminating Hamas from Gaza and paving the way for a new Palestinian governing structure will be greater than ever.
