Is Saudi Arabia Preparing to Eliminate the Houthis?
According to several reports, Saudi Arabia is preparing a large-scale military campaign against the Houthis in Yemen. The reported plan includes both Red Sea naval operations and a ground offensive in central Yemen. However, Saudi Arabia has not officially confirmed these reports.
If true, this would mark the biggest turning point in the Yemen war in years.
Militarily, the Houthis may be facing their greatest threat since taking control of much of northern Yemen. Unlike previous years, Iran, the group’s main backer, is now under significant pressure and may no longer be able to provide support on the same scale. If Saudi Arabia combines its newly announced maritime coalition with a coordinated ground campaign, Houthi military capabilities could suffer a devastating blow.
If Saudi Arabia is forced to launch a major operation to secure the Red Sea and protect its own security, it also raises questions about the role of the United States, long regarded as the primary security guarantor for Gulf allies. A key U.S. partner would still find itself preparing a major ground campaign to deal with a direct threat on its own doorstep.
The issue, however, is not only about Washington. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has expanded ties with China and pursued a more balanced foreign policy to reduce its dependence on the United States. That also gives Washington reasons to reassess the extent of its security commitments to Riyadh, because security guarantees are ultimately tied to strategic interests. If Saudi Arabia ultimately has to act largely on its own, it may signal that both Washington and Riyadh are recalibrating expectations within their long-standing alliance.
If the offensive is launched and succeeds, the consequences will extend far beyond Yemen. The regional balance of power could shift significantly. After Hezbollah and other Iran-backed groups have been weakened, the Houthis could become the next key component of Tehran’s regional network to face the risk of collapse.
