America Is Losing Something More Valuable
After the war with Iran, the United States and Kuwait are reportedly reassessing their long-standing security partnership. Washington is considering reducing its military footprint to lower risks, while Kuwait is seeking stronger air defenses and expanding defense ties with other partners, including Pakistan.
This reflects a new reality on the modern battlefield. The presence of thousands of American troops no longer guarantees protection against missile and drone attacks. When partners continue to come under fire despite hosting U.S. forces, Washington’s image as the region’s security guarantor has suffered a significant blow.
A vacuum of trust can be just as dangerous as a vacuum of power. If America’s partners no longer believe Washington can protect them against emerging threats, they will have every incentive to diversify their security relationships instead of relying on a single power. Kuwait may only be the beginning.
If this trend spreads, Washington’s influence will gradually erode, not because the United States has become weaker, but because its allies and partners no longer want to place their entire security under a single umbrella.
